What’s a fitness plateau? It’s a sense of feeling stuck. Like you’ve been getting faster, stronger, and more fit for the past several weeks. And then, it all comes to a screeching halt.
If you’ve hit a plateau in your workouts, first know that you’re in good company. While pursuing a long-term fitness habit, plateaus are inevitable. But the good news is, you’re not stuck in the same place forever.
Here are a few ideas on how to break through a fitness plateau:
Try keeping a fitness journal.
If you’re curious to learn more about how your body (and mind) react to your workouts and fitness level, try keeping a fitness journal. Keeping track of your workouts over time can help you identify patterns in your workout routine. So if or when you find yourself stuck on a plateau, you can take a look back at your workouts and figure out how you got there.
Find ways to do uncomfortable things.
When was the last time you mixed things up at the gym? Even making small adjustments to your workouts can create significant results. For example, try to get in a few more reps or rounds. Challenge yourself with new movements or add a little bit of weight where you can. Pick up the pace or rest a few seconds less. All these slight adjustments can add up to improvements.
Check-in with what’s going on outside the gym.
Sometimes something outside of the gym causes a fitness plateau. Check-in with your daily routine and make sure that you’re still getting plenty of recovery and sleep between your workouts. Take a look at what you’ve been eating or drinking lately, and look for opportunities to change.
