Building a consistent workout habit has many physical and mental benefits. However, if you’ve been working out regularly for several weeks or months, you may experience a workout slump.
If you’re feeling unmotivated or like you’re not making much progress with your fitness, here are three tips to help you get out of a workout slump:
1. Add Variety.
Creating consistency in your workouts is great – until your routine begins to feel monotonous. If you’re feeling bored, try adding some variety to your workouts.
Variety can mean trying something brand new, like trying a new class at a new time. Or, you can mix up what you’re familiar with by changing your traditional routine by adding movement modifications or using new or different equipment options.
2. Set SMART Goals.
When was the last time you checked in on your fitness goals? If it’s been awhile or you’ve lost track of your personal fitness goals, then it can be helpful to revisit your SMART goals. If you haven’t set goals, take some time to think about what you want to focus on.
Goals help you direct your focus with your workouts. Rather than showing up and just making it through a class or workout, you have a clear purpose. SMART goals also help you measure your progress. Sometimes you may feel like you’re not making any progress. But if you have measurable goals, then you also have a way to gauge what you’ve accomplished.
3. Challenge Yourself.
Sometimes the best way to break out of a workout slump is with a new challenge. If you’re not feeling challenged, then it’s hard to push yourself past a fitness plateau. Challenging yourself can be as simple as increasing the intensity of your workouts. Instead of going through the motions, try to increase the weight you lift or push to get your heart rate just a little bit higher.
