Here are a few ways to help you reach your personal fitness goals:
1. Start with SMART goals.
SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. By taking the time to make sure you define your goals in this way increases your chances for success. A goal like “get more fit” is vague and impossible to measure. Goals that lack the specifics tend to get pushed off into the future continually. But with a SMART goal, you’re more likely to take action, and your hard work will pay off.
2. Share your goals with someone.
Another way you can help yourself reach your goals is by sharing them with a friend or a family member. If you keep your goal a secret, the only person that can hold you accountable is yourself. Some days, we all need a little bit of help and support. So by telling someone else about your goals, you’ll increase your accountability and get some much-needed support.
3. Be consistent.
Consistency can go a long way in increasing your chances of accomplishing your goals. Once you have a plan in place, do your best to stick with that plan. But also remember that consistency needs to allow for some flexibility, as well. Things will happen, and you may need to adjust your strategy. You could get sick or need to travel unexpectedly. When faced with setbacks, rather than giving up or abandoning your plan altogether, be open to changing things as needed.
4. Track your progress.
As you work toward your goals, tracking your progress along the way also increases your chances of success. Keeping a workout log or journal creates a record of everything you’ve done so far. On days that you feel less motivated or that you’re not making any progress, it’s helpful to look back at this history and see how far you’ve actually come.
